[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

I returned to Machias Seal on Wednesday.

Noted several EAGLES around St. Stephen and Calais and several others between Calais and Cutler.
No surprises along our flight line, with the usual scatterings of winter ducks, gulls etc.

Here on the island I've had limited time or little inclination for much birding. ( I don't like cold, wet & windy.)

Nonetheless:
I've seen upwards of 8 SONG SPARROWS {expected};
1 likely SAVANNAH SPARROW {unexpected, summer breeder};
good numbers of HARLEQUINS {no total yet but likely 50-ish};
a low-normal population of PURPLE SANDPIPERS;
a few RAZORBILLS;
3 PUFFINS;
a couple COMMON LOONS;
HERRING, GREAT BLACK BACKED & ICELAND GULLS & BLACK LEGGED KITTIWAKES;
small groups of COMMON EIDERS;
scattered RED BREASTED MERGANSERS & some LONG TAILED DUCKS.

Thursday night (actually the wee hours of Friday) I picked up a grounded NORTHERN FULMAR. It proved to be unharmed and, after a bit of drying and preening, I took it to the shore and released it.
But, as wildlife is wont to do, it vented its displeasure .... literally. Here's the link to the indignant Fulmar.

Later on Friday, the 18th, a gray morph GYRFALCON {previously reported here} stopped very briefly and then continued roughly towards Bar Harbour, Maine.
