[Maine-birds] Re: "Cross-billed" Chickadee

Hey Margaret, I have seen a few like this over the years. Also noticed it in a few finches and even a warbler once. In looking for resources, I found this site. Alaska Science Center - Beak Deformity. There was a lot of good info on it and you can report your bird there as well. They mainly study Alaska birds, but do take observations from everywhere. The more info we present to them the better they understand the scope of the problem.

Cheers!

For the past couple of weeks I have seen a chickadee with a deformed "crossed" bill at my feeders. He appears to be OK, eats both the meaties and suet. About the only difference I see, is that his feathers may be a little more "puffed" out than others, and he stays longer at the food, rather than "grab and go";  I presume since he has to work harder to get a meal.

I took a few photos this morning, if interested: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S26337608
