[Maine-birds] Birding By Schooner, 7/25-30 (RBTR, massive inshore number of RAZO, RTLO, RECR, tubenoses, etc).

Hi all,

I spent last week guiding aboard the Schooner Lewis R. French out of Camden on our annual "Birding by Schooner" tour. Here are the daily highlights:

1) 7/25: Camden to Burnt Coat Harbor, Swan's Island.
- 1 imm GREAT CORMORANT, Scraggy Island (southwest of Stonington).

2) 7/26: Swan's Island to Babson Island.
- 1 RED CROSSBILL, Burnt Coat Harbor

3) 7/27: Babson Island to Seal Island.
- the RED-BILLED TROPICBIRD, Seal Island, 4:17-4:40pm.

4) 7/28: Seal Island to Fox Islands Thorofare.
- numerous calling Leach's Storm-Petrels all night, Seal Island.
- 1 CORY'S SHEARWATER, 1 MANX SHEARWATER, 37 Great Shearwaters, and a mere two Wilson's Storm-Petrels, off east side of Seal Island to Wooden Ball Island.

5) 7/29: Vinalhaven to Gilkey Harbor, Islesboro.
- 252 RAZORBILLS, between Beach and Hog Islands, East Penobscot Bay (Delorme Map 15: C-2). Over 20 miles from the open water (closest point on the mainland would be Cape Rozier), Captain Garth Wells and other schooner fleet captains have been noticing a group of 30-40 Razorbills "on a regular basis" in this productive area. Although a few are regular here, and Captain Wells sees them often in this area after storms or in 1's and 2's throughout the late summer, he had never seen a group so regularly. We did a thorough check under slow sailing and drifting, and this was my conservative count.
- 1 RED-THROATED LOON, same area as the Razorbills.

The complete triplist (a record low total number of species) and photos of Troppy and the Razorbills, etc can be seen on my blog, here:
