Hi everyone:
Maine Audubon's weekly bird walk at Gilsland Farm enjoyed the DST shift this morning and saw a nice influx of more 'winter' birds. Navigating around the meadows during high tide we were able to tally 41 species with a few highlights:
Ring-necked Duck - group of 4. Much more common in the spring here, this is only my second fall record at Gilsland.
Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, and Red-breasted Merganser - all steadily increasing.
(apparent) Common x Barrow's Goldeneye hybrid - interesting drake among the goldeneye flock. More notes in my checklist.
Red-tailed Hawk - made a few half-hearted attempts at the growing starling flock
Northern Shrike - immature bird being harassed by songbirds. My 200th species for Gilsland!
Common Raven - uncommon in Gilsland airspace; heard calling from the golf course
Palm Warbler - apparent 'Yellow' bird in the North Meadow
American Tree Sparrow - first we've had on the walks this fall
Here is a complete checklist from the walk: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32457855
Also, a summary of the GYBOB (Get Your Butt Out Birding) event from 29-30 November is posted at: http://ebird.org/content/me/news/gybob-2016-summary/ Many thanks to Becky Marvil for getting this event started!
Good birding,
