[Maine-birds] Seal Island boat trip

You’ll never guess what the most unusual bird was on today’s trip to Seal Island. If you can’t wait, skip to the end.

The Isle au Haut Ferry made a special trip to Seal Island south of Stonington today to witness the beginnings of the Gray Seal pupping colony. About a hundred seals were on the north end of the island. No pups were seen yet, but three Bald Eagles were circling overhead, waiting for the feast of placentas to begin.

Meanwhile, there were 50 Purple Sandpipers near the biggest concentration of seals. About eight Northern Gannets were encountered, all adults. Several swirled overhead at the island. The rest were viewed to and fro.

A few flocks of distant Razorbills were noteworthy, and one Thick-billed Murre passed close to the starboard side of the boat, seen by almost nobody on board but me, dagnabit.

A Red-throated Loon surfaced right next to Robinson Point Lighthouse.

But, in my opinion, the most unusual bird of the trip passed by the boat as we returned to the pier: a Belted Kingfisher – the latest I’ve seen one this far north.
