Yesterday, 14 intrepid souls ventured out into the freezing rain for Waterville's 42nd Christmas Bird Count. Not all data is in, but preliminary results show that 46 species were tallied. Notable birds were a Merlin, a Yellow-Shafted Flicker, 2 Eastern Bluebirds, 13 Pine Grosbeaks, a Red-Shouldered Hawk, a Barred Owl and a Bufflehead. Count week birds included the Northern Mockingbird, Great Horned Owl, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Sharp-Shinned Hawk and Cedar Waxwings. Horned Larks were high at 325 individuals.
