[Maine-birds] Belfast Bay census of Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016

Gary Gulezian and I did the census in the morning on that day.  The weather was cold (-2 to 7 F.), calm, and partly cloudy.  Sea smoke was very thick over the bay, and even into the downtown harbor.  The only birds that were visible were those near shore, which meant that some species were not recorded and others recorded only in small numbers.  Nevertheless, the winter inundation by Mallards is here with 541 counted.  The total number of birds counted was 936 and the species number was 12 (the cold weather may have contributed to this).  As an aside, we watched a coyote for about 10 minutes as it crossed the mouth of the Little River, looking for food, and seemingly unaware of us.
