Visitors:
36 people stopped by today, some of whom were in awe of what was taking place, and completely new to hawk counting, while others stopped just long enough to read our score board. Most people were shocked and excited to learn I had seen seventeen separate Broad-winged Hawks today. For the time of year, I would have liked to see ten times that many, but I can't complain, even one is still exciting to me.
Weather:
A thick fog covered the surrounding area for the first half hour, before retreating towards the coast. Moisture remained in the air, reducing overall visibility to a status of fair.Winds were light and variable at times, mostly coming from the northeast. Temperatures reached a high of around 50 degrees. Cloud cover remained for the entire day with very few glimpses of sunshine.
Raptor Observations:
The first three hours of the count did not produce a single migrant. A couple of local birds took to the sky, which provided me with something to look at. By early afternoon there was a small yet brief push of birds. Nothing spectacular, but I was happy to break the single digit mark. I believe there is now a local pair of Osprey on territory near the mountain. A male and female have been seen together occasionally, foraging nearby.
Non-raptor Observations:
Well, I wish I had something interesting to report today. I suppose I could tell you about the man from Nantucket, who kept his cash in a bucket. Maybe some other time. 33 species were seen or heard today, mostly fleeting glimpses, or a brief call note.
Predictions:
Tomorrow looks like rain with colder than normal temperatures. Wind should be from the east-southeast at 10-20mph. I'm not sure if I will even set foot on the mountain tomorrow. If so, it probably won't be for long. Maybe I can spot an Osprey or two.
