OK, that’s just ironic. I spent the last two weekends up in the north woods, enjoying boreal species. This morning, I stepped outside my house and heard a black-backed woodpecker calling here on the north end of Pushaw Lake in Hudson. I tracked it down for a good look. It’s the fourth time I’ve had them in or near my yard over the years.
I do find that black-backs wander by mid-autumn. Three-toeds seem to stay put, near where they nested.
