I spent the last two nights camping at Harrington Lake in the North Maine Woods. Among the highlights: a great horned owl calling over the campsite that would NOT shut up!
But most impressive: white-crowned sparrows were everywhere. Every weedy roadside patch had a bundle of them. It was by far the most abundant sparrow in the woods, and that includes the juncos which have also grouped up into big flocks.
It’s grouse hunting season, so the choice was made to bird mostly on Sunday when there was no need to fight the traffic on those hidden back roads. I don’t know how many ruffed grouse the typical hunter encounters, but I tallied six, and a bonus spruce grouse.
Notably absent: crossbills. I had a ton of them last winter, and none since the beginning of summer.
