You are partly right, Delia. It certainly is noteworthy however this has been going on for a very long time. I have observed this nightly migration of crows into Portland (and other large towns in Maine) for decades. It begins in the Fall and continues nightly throughout the winter. They depart at first light heading back to their country digs. One evening years ago I stopped at the edge of Deering Oaks at dusk and rough counted 3,000 crows in two large adjacent trees. The only reason I have ever heard is safety. I have no idea if this is wholly or partly true or if it is simply a social event. I'm glad you mentioned it. I would welcome hearing what others have seen and heard about this behavior. It has always amused me.
