Observation end time: 16:30:00
Total observation time: 9.25 hours
Official Counter: Katrina Fenton
Observers: Dan Nickerson, Ken Klapper
Visitors:
25.
Weather:
A clear start to the morning with a few clouds moving in around noon and
then quickly dissipating. The wind was much lighter than the last couple of
days, blowing from the west and swinging southwest at 10-15mph, and
decreasing by late afternoon. Temperatures rose to the upper 40s.
Raptor Observations:
Vultures, vultures everywhere and finaly some to count! After a relatively
slow March for Turkey Vulture migration, today's rush of birds was a
welcome change. High, northbound vultures were the order of the day, with a
final push of 19 birds in the last 30 minutes of the count.
Non-raptor Observations:
Three days in a row with Bohemian Waxwings as yesterday's flock of 8 grew
to 20. Hawkwatch Junco kept a sharp lookout for potential predators while
trilling from the top of an oak, and the local Mourning Dove pair were
becoming a bit flirtatious down by the shrubbery.
Non-raptor migrants:
Canada Goose: 7 Common Merganser- 3
American Black Duck- 2 duck sp.- 2
Tree Swallow- 7 European Starling- 1 American robin- 29
Red-winged Blackbird- 8
Common Grackle- 6 blackbird sp.- 22
American Goldfinch- 2 passerine sp.- 12
Predictions:
Similar to today, but warmer, with a high in the mid-50s. The wind will be
out of the southwest at 10-15mph, becoming lighter in the afternoon. Cloud
cover will increase from a partly cloudy start to a mostly cloudy finish.
It should be a good day, with maybe a continuation of the vulture flight.
With the extra clouds, high-flying birds should be a bit easier to spot.
