Good variety of birds at the Messalonskee Marsh boat launch in the late afternoon sun today.
4 Sandhill Cranes
~30 Ring-necked Ducks
1 Osprey
3 Bald Eagles (1 adult),
1 Pied-billed Grebe
2 Wood Ducks
8 Common Merganser
4 Hooded Merganser
4 Common Goldeneye
~50 Canada Geese
2 Black Ducks
4 Mallards
The sandhills flew in from the south to the eastern side of the marsh in 2 pairs, then all foraged together.
One of the immature eagles stole a meal from the adult, went into the water for it, then "paddled" about 20 ft to shore with it's wings. It's prey was a white waterfowl of some sort.
