Hi all,
Despite the dense fog, a large movement of birds was underway overnight in the southern half of Maine. The Gray radar showed a moderate to strong flight, although the overall intensity of the flight is a little harder to determine with fog around.
However, the Caribou radar showed virtually no visible migration. Therefore, it seems that birds arriving from the south (huge flight over much of southern New England last night) either did not have the time or energy to make it that far north, or more likely, they were limited in their progress by a northerly wind and the dense fog. Even here in southern Maine, a very light northerly wind likely impacted birds.
Therefore, I think there could be a lot of birds around Southern Maine this am, especially in migrants traps - and perhaps especially in urban areas where lights in the fog resulted in disorientation.
I for one, am heading out the door...after 12 days of just a trickle of migration thanks to a blocking high overhead, and a large low to our south (as I have been discussing via micro-blogs on our store's Facebook Page) the floodgates are finally opening. Of course, I have a plane to catch later this morning!
