[Maine-birds] more Monhegan

I also had the pleasure of doing some Monhegan birding over the weekend when I took out a day trip of folks on an LL Bean Discovery School birding trip from New Harbor on Sunday (May 19). The participants were largely beginners and we enjoyed some nice views of many of the species that others have mentioned. Indigo Buntings were certainly a favorite as were some nice looks at Blackpoll, Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Black-throated Green warblers, etc. We got to hear the Winter Wren that Kristen mentioned singing away down near Lobster Cove and enjoyed nice looks at a Peregrine Falcon soaring over Manana. We had close to 60 species in the five hours or so we were on the island.

One really fun part of the trip for many of the participants was that on the boat ride back to New Harbor (Hardy Boat), we saw four or five puffins including several on the water at pretty close range. There were a few Northern Gannets around as well and a migrating flock of Surf and White-winged Scoters. Topped it off with two whistling Broad-winged Hawks flying quite low over the boat while we waited to get off at the dock in New Harbor.
