Acadia Birding Festival College of the Atlantic June 2 2013, Hancock, US-ME
Jun 3, 2013 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: One Black-bellied Whistling Duck remains on Mount Desert Island suspended in Time and preserved for the future in a Collage of the Atlantic freezer.
1 species
Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis) 1 DOP (Dead in Pond) female (?) Black-bellied Whistling Duck remains on Mount Desert Island. Her five compatriots are off in search of food sources more potent and energy giving than Pond Weed from the MDI High School ponds! This female most assuredly died of exposure after running into classic cold Maine late spring. I appreciate the uniqueness of these birds in Maine recognizing that in other locations this is a common species. Avian synergistic bird movements during Acadia Birding Festival made this one of the most memorable migrations on Mount Desert Island and we had the people power to survey and I write this as a EULOGY to the one bird left behind..... Dendrocygna autumnalis, the Mexican Marsh Duck. It will soon be taking a trip to southern Maine where Louis Bevier will broaden the story.
