I was out on Roque Is yesterday and the return boat trip produced the following:
400 Surf scoters (there may have been other scoters mixed in)
3 White-winged scoters
1 Black-scoter males
3 Oldsquaw
3 Black guillemots
3 Common loons
Herring, black-backed and ring-billed gulls
On Roque Island (not birding)
1 Merlin
1 Sharp-shinned hawk
2 Bald eagles imm.1 Am robin
3 Dark-eyed juncos
1 Flicker
5 Boreal chickadees
4 Golden-crowned kinglets
1 Song sparrow Singing
4 White-crowned sparrows - Two singing
4 White throated sparrows
4 Double-crested cormorants
Some highlights from the Viles Arboretum over last week stretching back to the weekend (five walking trips along Piggery Road including the boardwalk (3 visits) and one visit to Piggery Pond):
Virginia rail pairs 3 days giving assorted vocalizations; one sighting at Piggery Pond and separate sightings at either end of the marsh
Blue grosbeak
Orchard oriole male
Palm warblers - 2 singing just after dark on two occasions (most like the same bird as the location and timing of the song were the same but separated by two days)
Common yellowthroats - 2 (again, probably the same bird calling from the same location along Piggery road at the same time at sunset)
Black-throated green warbler - 1 Near pond
Northern parula - 1 bird near pond
Yellow-rumped warbler - 3 birds on three visits
Blue-headed vireos - 3 birds near near pond on one visit
Ruby-crowned kinglets - 1 to 3 birds on three visits
Cedar waxwing - 4 birds one visit
Yellow-bellied sapsucker 1 bird
Song sparrows - 8-15 birds each day; 1-3 birds singing each day in the afternoon and just before dark
White-crowned sparrows - 5-25 each visit; singing each day - nice song
Gray catbirds - 2-5 each day
Hermit thrush - 1 oddly a single bird
Eastern bluebird - 1 to 22 birds each visit with on bird during a shorter visit (only one day above 10 birds)
Swamp sparrows - 10-22 birds each day
Chipping sparrow 1
Savannah sparrow - 1-4 birds each day
Rusty blackbird -1 bird
Red-winged blackbird - 1-3 birds on three visits
Northern cardinal - 1 bird each on two visits
Tufted titmouse 1 bird
Green-winged teal - 8-30 birds on three visits after sunset flying into the ponds
Am black duck - 4-23 birds on three visits flying in after sunset
Mallard - One to three birds each visit in pools in cattails
Chickadees, crows, ravens, hairy woodpeckers, mourning doves and herring gulls each day
