A Short-eared Owl was seen over Biddeford Pool at dawn this morning. First detected being mobbed by crows, it out-soared them, gaining altitude until it was only a speck and drifting south. About 10 minutes later, however, it reappeared over the pool, was briefly harassed by some Bonnaparte's Gulls (odd to see. How did they even know it was a threat?) and then landed on the far side of the marsh from Hatties. It might choose to spend the day there, if the crows don't drive it away.
-- Other good birds at Hatties include a few Nelson's Sparrow, a possible Ipswich Savannah and several Lapland Longspurs (all seen walking out into the marsh from Hatties).
Despite the unfortunate lack of Bell's Vireos or Variegated Flycatchers (I can dream) it was a good mourning of birding
