[Maine-birds] Bar Harbor Whale Watch (RFI)

Hello,

My family and I will be on vacation in July and have booked the Bar
Harbor Whale Watch/Puffin tour for July 9. I was told by the woman
who sold me the tickets that the naturalist on the boat will help me
out with some of the bird IDs. I've done my research and know what to
look for, though obviously with something I've never done before, it's
one thing to ID a bird that's right in front of me, or floating in the
water, and another thing if it's a quick flyby or is at an angle not
shown in my guidebooks.

I guess I just wanted to ask the list, those of you who have done this
trip, what to expect, where to look, and whatever tips might be useful
for making IDs on pelagic birds in flight. Also--what are the best
ways to tell an Arctic Tern (which I've never seen) from a Common or
Forster's Tern (which are hard enough to tell from each other in
breeding plumage!)

I've seen a few of the birds that are common on this trip (Pomarine
Jaeger, Black Guillemot, Northern Gannett, Razorbill), but pretty much
all of the others will be new for me.

Thanks!
