Belgrade--Had a great bird walk with my students Tuesday. We were observing the bank swallows on Depot Road when a falcon (identified as a falcon first by one of my 4th graders!) went into a dive out over the pit. Seemed to come up empty. Merlin.
A few minutes later we noticed a much bigger bird fly into one of the burrows and realized it was a kingfisher. I saw it fly back over the school later. We also enjoyed the purple martins, killdeer, and a pair of cooperative yellow warblers.
In Sidney tonight I had an indigo bunting at the park and ride on the Lyons Road. FOY. Actually the first I've seen in a couple of years.
In my yard--bluebirds ousted one of the pairs of tree swallows and built their nest on top of the swallow nest--I think. At last check they were sitting on eggs. Tree swallows are occupying two other boxes. They have hatched out--six hatchlings in one box--usually have only four to five.
The dawn chorus is reaching its crescendo with bobolinks still going full blast along with all of our other residents (savannah sparrows, c. yellowthroat, yellow warbler, redstart, robin, phoebe, song sparrows).
