I suspect the "Florida" mention of this extravagantly unusual bird in Atlantic waters was offered as a vague memory, but I'll correct it with certainty. We have no report of Tufted Puffin, not even hypothetical, from Florida. The most recent reviews of Florida's avifauna (Robertson & Woolfenden 1992, Stevenson & Anderson 1994, our most recent Greenlaw et al. 2014, and the early classic Howell 1932, offer no support for this suggestion. Now, we have had Long-billed Murrelet, Dovekie, Atlantic Puffin, Thick-billed Murre, and a flood of Razorbills a year ago, perhaps some of Ralph's MSI productivity. Florida's official avifauna stands at 516 (2013), fourth behind California, Texas, and Arizona in the country.
Congratulations to Ralph Eldridge for the discovery!

Two previous reports, one from England 4 - 6 years ago in June or July. One purportedly taken from the mouth of the Kennebec and used by Audubon in his birds of America. Some uncertainties on provenance. All will become clear once we publish the eternal book.

This is pretty amazing. How often are Tufted Puffins found in the Atlantic? I can't recall hearing of one in our 'pond'.===============================

Subject: [Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORTI've posted a few more T. Puffin shots at http://www.pbase.com/lightrae/naturenbThey aren't great quality but they do show the feather tufts and a comparison with an A. Puffin.I haven't seen it this morning but with poor light and thousands of birds in constant motion one gets cross-eyed rather quickly.--
