Saw and heard my first Northern Shrike of the season this AM at the McCrea Flat along the Aroostook River in Fort Fairfield. Its arrival was right on schedule by my records.
-- A couple Blue Jays were tending to it for several minutes but they eventually backed off. I was alerted to the birds presence by its catbird-like mewing...not a vocalization I'd heard before.
Also two Great Horned Owls were vocalizing here as the sun rose.
