[Maine-birds] Townsend's Solitaire, etc. Dec 08

The continuing T Solitaire was present at about 8:30 this morning (seen by one other birder), then again at about 12:30 P.M. (witnessed by 5 of us) feeding on both winterberry and multiflora rose. Fairly unwary, but not approachable because of crunchy snow/ice cover. Couple of brief flights to and from cover, where it displayed well its loose-jointed, "gangle-shanks" flight style. If one had stopped immediately after crossing the little bridge, one would have had good looks, in good light, of the bird.

In other news, dropped by the Brunswick landfill looking for whatever, and it was closed (Monday). There wasn't a single gull or eagle in sight. I suppose they are totally tuned into visiting only when the trash is being stirred up.

I also checked some favorite winter-duck spots on the Sabattus River in Lisbon Falls, and found that water-body completely frozen, except for a small section right at the dam and mill. 4 Hoodies there.

Finally…Yesterday evening, I had seen 3 ducks on Silver Lake, Phippsburg (the small pond in front of the Stone House B&B), 2 of which looked suspiciously like hen Tufted Ducks. Got terrible photos thru my window, and wanted to check them out again. When I returned this afternoon, the pond was totally locked up, ducks gone. Completely open water to ice in one overnight. (My window is unreliable as far as closing. Opens fine…closes not so much.)
