Happy New Year to all,
Late last year I asked for some input on what folks had experienced with their progressive, bi-focal, and tri-focal lenses when birding with bins and scopes. I want to thank the folks that responded - I received many interesting comments on their experience with glasses and birding.
As I noted in my query, my eye sight has lessen so that my astigmatism was now interfering with my ability to see clearly, even with bins and scopes or in general. Thus, the need for full time use of glasses or contacts. Not wanting to go with contacts, I wondered about which lenses I choose for my glasses.
I started out with progressive lenses (before my email to you) but was not satisfied with them for everyday use for reading ( only one or two lines of print in focus at a time so had to bob the head up and down to read) , computer use (again -could not find a large “sweet spot”), or TV viewing. But they were fine with bins and scopes use.
After reading your comments, I decided to opt for my one time lens change (no extra charge) and try bi-focals. I have been very satisfied with the bi-focals - especially for reading (more lines in focus so do not have to bob my head up and down to have more than one or two lines of print in focus) ! Computer - I use a laptop on my desk - as long as I sit up (good posture) I can use the reading portion of the lenses - they work well for me. FYI - some folks suggested getting a pair of designated computer glasses - full lens of computer distance prescription to keep by the computer and use only there. Maybe that might be necessary if your reading prescription is stronger than mine is or you have other issues with your vision. I am still fine with my reading prescription. If your computer screen is at a higher level than my laptop - that could alter your glasses need as well.
A good suggestion from one of the responders was to have the reading part of the bi-focal set a tad lower than the standard used by the industry. With that slight adjustment, I have no problem using the bi-focals with my bins or scope or playing tennis or pickleball (if you have not tried pickleball, check this out - http://www.wsj.com/video/move-over-tennis-pickleball-is-here/A528AB1A-5CA0-4E27-8C98-6902B9F7D7FF.html) - a great game - fun, energetic, social and great exercise!!)
I appreciate having this website available to gather information on subjects like this that certainly affect our enjoyment of every day birding as well as keeping us all posted (in a timely manner) on the great birds that are being sighted around the state.
I want to take this opportunity to thank Doug for being the moderator of Maine Birds - a job well done. Thank you Doug!! J
