[Maine-birds] Very cooperative Gyrfalcon in Wells Harbor

We were in the right place at the right time today. That almost makes up for all the times I’ve been in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is exactly one tree alongside the parking lot in Wells Harbor. Around 12:30 this afternoon, the  Gyrfalcon was sitting in it – point blank and unconcerned with people. So close and what a brute! I believe he could swallow a peregrine whole.

Just before noon, the King Eider was still visible in the distance from the Cliff House in York. There were at least three Snowy Owls present in Biddeford Pool. Despite the cold, the wind died almost completely through the day and I occasionally found myself overdressed.

Photos of the Gyrfalcon (taken by Linda Powell), Snowy Owl, and a few other birds are at https://www.facebook.com/MaineBirdingTrail.
