Folks,
The GYRFALCON was seen and photographed by Linda Woodard and Turk Duddy in the OGUNQUIT MARSH last Saturday, January 10th (from parking lot at end of Ocean St.). To their credit, the bird was distant and they called me for ID advice at the time. Over the phone, dark morph Rough-legged Hawk sounded most likely, but Turk and Linda correctly identified the bird tonight after looking at photos of the Kennebunk bird and their bird Saturday. Turk sent the photos, and it is the bird for sure. Given I was watching Rhinoceros Auklets and Black-vented Shearwaters at the time of their call, I plead mea culpa for not thinking Gyrfalcon. This does highlight that Gyrs can be mistaken for buteos and vice versa. They saw the Gyr about 10:45-10:55 am and it was on the deck in the marsh, then flew off. More later. This certainly expands the search area and fills a gap in the bird's movements from Madbury, NH, coastward and then north.
