Project SEANET volunteers patrol beaches up and down both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, monitoring them for deceased sea birds which have washed up on beaches. Photos and location data are taken, and signs of oil, etc. are documented. Occasional birds are taken for necropsy. They also mark birds they find with zip ties, so that if the bird is seen again, it is clear that the bird is not new. This also allows SEANET to build up information on how long these casualties persist on the beach.
By monitoring birds washed up on beaches, SEANET builds a picture of what is happening to these species on the open ocean.
Thanks to Noah Perlut (U.N.E.) for clarifying this. For more on SEANET see http://vet.tufts.edu/seanet
