I was out for a run on Webster Street in Lewiston this morning when I saw a tree full of birds just to the north on one of the side streets. Given the number, general size, and the way they appeared kind of dark due to backlighting from a hazy, bright overcast, I assumed that they were starlings and almost kept running. But curiosity won out so I stopped to take a look, and sure enough, there were roughly 150 Bohemian Waxwings in the tree. I had to get pretty close to get a look at them (since I didn't have my binoculars or camera), and they began to fly off as I was counting them. Nonetheless, the gray bellies and dark reddish undertail coverts were obvious, and as far as I could tell they were all BOWAs. I didn't notice any Cedars mixed in, but without any optical assistance and with the birds taking flight as I got too close, I can't be absolutely sure about that.
Regardless, it was quite an unexpected treat on what was otherwise an entirely unremarkable 6-mile run!
