Re: [Maine-birds] Waterville crows

I live right across the street ( Ridge Road, Waterville) from where the crows often stage before they settle down for the night.  Their roost varies by a 1/2 mile or so around the second Waterville I95 exit (going North).  They often are on every tree in my yard and across the street and the noise can be deafening at times.  They start coming in large groups about 3/4 hour before dusk starting in very late October, all November, Dec and January. They sometimes roost right at the Main Street, Waterville/Walmart exit where they are lined up like soldiers, shoulder to shoulder, on every branch straight ahead of the exit as you leave the ramp, right beside I95 and can be seen in the dark with the street lights.

It is also my area for the X-mas bird count and I have counted 8,520 (by 10's at first, then by 50's at the peak time of about 20 minutes) as they fly over my house. Since I am only viewing the birds that are coming from the north and east, we guess that it is only about half of the total of at least 15,000 birds.  It's hard to get a photo because it's always dusk and the scale just can't seem to be captured in one shot.

 It is fascinating, though!

Subject: [Maine-birds] Waterville crows

Every year, I am blown away by the crows around Waterville. I drove two miles south of exit 127 on 95 and, for two miles, crows were flying parallel to the highway before I finally lost track of the flock. Based on the crows flying overhead IN Waterville before getting on 95, I wouldn't be surprised if the flock extended at least 3 miles. Amazing.
