At long last, I had a day free to hit the woods above Millinocket. It’s still winter up in the Telos area – more than a foot of snow in the woods.
As is my custom, I wanted to lock down the location for rare woodpeckers in advance of birding tours this summer. My favorite spots were inaccessible, so I had more time to explore my emergency backup woodpeckers.
Just west of Chamberlain Lake: 2 very romantically inclined American Three-toed Woodpeckers.
Just west of Harrington Lake: 1 very cooperative Black-backed Woodpecker in a place that always looked promising for them, but never actually produced one until today.
Many Boreal Chickadees. Lots of friendly Gray Jays.
Red Crossbills everywhere. Even more Pine Siskins. Wicked finchy.
