[Maine-birds] Weskeag Marsh 5/21

Went looking for the Ruff yesterday (5/21), was at the Buttermilk Lane parking area from around 2:30pm to 4:30ish. No ruff, but saw several snowy egrets, northern shovelers, great blues, sandpipers, mallards, yellowlegs, and an American black duck. Was a first-time visit for me to the Marsh, lovely area, and so many birds!

Did want to let the group know that the Buttermilk lane parking area is a tick-heavy area right now. We brought our little dog with us, and we walked her yesterday for maybe 10 minutes total around the parking area, and she only went about 18 inches into the grass from the gravel, walking around the perimeter of the parking area...and we picked 18 ticks off her afterward. My partner Mike and I picked 4 ticks off of ourselves, and we hadn't gone into the grass at all. Thought it would be good to let folks know. The Marsh is absolutely worth the trip (and we're thinking of going back to see if we can find the ruff!), but it's wise to use strong precautions against ticks in that parking area. We were surprised at how many we found, given that we had so little contact with the grass. Just wanted to let others know of our experience!

Hoping to hear if any others saw the ruff yesterday or today. :)
