[Maine-birds] Baird's (9), Sanderlings (1,300+), Leseer Bl-bk Gull (3)

We birded Seawall Beach on the receding tide about 3 pm, sat pm. I don't remember seeing so many Sanderlings on the western end of Seawall, 1,300+ and all juveniles, some molting into first winter. Not an adult among them. It's exciting to know that they've had a good breeding season.

Mike F's Baird's corner was littered with juveniles, 9 in all. I've never seen anything like this number in Maine. The flock seemed more like the high Andes than the Maine coast. These birds are feeding along the Morse River, just seaward of the marsh. They were deep in the river which is atypical feeding behavior for me.

There were 3 adult Lessers among the very large gull flock, two of which clearly different from previous birds, dull yellow legs. Like last time, 2 disappeared within 5 minutes. They don't linger.

Great time of year.

Best, Peter
