[Maine-birds] Yellow-crowned Night Heron seen at Belfast

While Gary and I were doing our first bi-weekly census of Belfast Bay of the season this morning (Sun., Sept. 4), Gary spotted an unusual heron at the High Street bridge over the Passagassawakeag River.  It turned out to be an immature Yellow-crowned Night Heron.  Attached is a photo of the bird. The bird was slightly taller and slimmer than a nearby Herring Gull. Its head had the shape of a night heron, the eyes were bright orange, and the bill was thick and wholly black, except for a yellowish streak along the bottom.  Overall color of the plumage on the back and wings was a dull brown peppered with pale tear-dropped shaped spots, which seemed to coalesce into streaks on the wings.  The head and neck was finely streaked with brown and a yellowish color.  The underparts were also streaked.  We were standing approximately 30 feet from the bird, and it was feeding at a small pool formed when the tide receded from the river.  There were small fish in the pool.   We observed the bird for about 20 minutes.
