[Maine-birds] SeaWatch at Schoodic Point

110 Northern Gannet streamed by Schoodic Point today between the hours of 6 -9:30 AM.
Common Loon (23) and Surf Scoter (10) were also tallied today. More importantly, the fall
migration of many species of waterbirds can be seen from this vantage point. Last year's
combined effort (Schoodic Point and Otter Cliffs) topped 50,000 birds during about 150 hours
of observation amassed during some 30 days of watch effort. In a typical year, Double-crested
Cormorant and Common Eider make up nearly 80% of the overall flight total.
Oddities have included jaegers, terns (Caspian and Common seen this week), and an
occasional shearwater, not to mention raptors and passerines that are sometimes seen.
Schoodic Institute in Acadia National Park is seeking skilled observers to help conduct these
counts. If interested, please contact me offline.
