Re: [Maine-birds] Digest for maine-birds@googlegroups.com - 8 updates in 5 topics

3:15 pm 9/17 seeing high flying raptors possibly adult bald eagle bc of stark white head huge wingspan but pointed wing tips.  Seeing three in east, north, and the big guy flying south. Still a stiffsoutherly wind turning a tad from the west.

After reading Dan's post about Broad-winged Hawks moving I glanced up out of my office window in downtown Gardiner a few minutes ago (10:10 AM) and had the pleasure of watching a kettle of at least 75 Broad-winged Hawks circling and then peeling off to the south. Don't remember ever seeing a kettle of Broad-wings like that here in Gardiner and certainly not from my office window.

Good luck to them as they make the journey to South America!

I hosted a hawk watch picnic lunch at the Wells Reserve today, but alas, the wind had already shifted to the south by the 11am start time. 75 minutes, 0 raptors.

We are getting a smattering of them here at the house in Cumberland getting lift off of Bruce Hill. Not watching steadily but checking from time to time since Dan's first post of it this morning has netted about 20 overall. Most have been higher up though and moving at speed in a SSW direction. Taking a little more time to enjoy the day it seems was a couple of ravens that were chasing each other about 100' above the tree line.

Cheers,

Rob

Paddling Shaker Bog Poland from route 26 access 2 Sandhills Cranes
relocated from west shore to marsh bordering Colbath Rd at north end. 8
least sandpipers 5 species of raptors including a river of Hawks forming
kettles as north wind turns south. 950 Broad-winged Hawks estimated. Easy
count as they rose above ridge line I was watching.
Challenging counting while standing on a floating bog
