A bit delayed, here is the Waterville CBC summary for Sunday, December 17.
On a cold, bright morning, a group of 20 set out for the count. Visibility was good with minimal open water.
Species count was slightly below average with 52 and an additional 5 during count week.
The more interesting birds included:
1 Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow, first for the count
1 American Pipit, first for the count
6 Rusty Blackbirds
Unusual and lingering:
1 Great Blue Heron
2 Hermit Thrushes
And during count week:
1 Northern Goshawk
1 Red-shouldered/Red-tailed hybrid, first identified during last year's CBC.
All time low number:
16 Herring Gulls
High count:
94 Northern Cardinals
6 Rusty Blackbirds
