Weather:
Partly cloudy skies allowed for periods of bright sun for much of the day. By the afternoon, dense clouds moved in, keeping the summit in the shade for the last couple of hours. Temps climbed to a high of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Winds had a little more of a westerly component than I had anticipated, but there were occasional, brief periods of southwest.
Raptor Observations:
When I arrived at the summit, I spooked a group of three Turkey Vultures who were sitting in the sun, on the summit. They took to the air as soon as they saw me, but not before leaving me a nice parting gift to step in. A highlight for me and a few other birders, was a well lit Merlin, whose flight line brought it in low and right overhead.
Non-raptor Observations:
I was at the summit a little earlier today, hoping to see some songbirds moving north. Unfortunately there was not much happening. Only a handful of Cormorants and a couple of Tree Swallows were noted. No new first of season arrivals today.
Predictions:
Southwest winds in the morning may be accompanied by more rain, which could be heaviest around midday. Wind speeds should be light, becoming more variable in direction as the day progresses.Temps will be a little lower than today, probably closer to the low 40's. Maybe another washout.
