Visitors:
39. Thanks, Julie, Phil, Laurel, Cynthia, and Phil for coming out to the
hawkwatch!
Weather:
A rainy morning with fog and low clouds once again put off the start of the
count. Skies remained overcast to mostly cloudy, with a few blue breaks and
warming sunshine late in the afternoon. The haze and fog vanished in the
final hour as the first surface boundary of the cold front dragged in dryer
air. A light, west-southwest wind did little but push around the low
clouds. Temperatures rose to the low 60s.
Raptor Observations:
A steady flight after the fog cleared. The immature Bald Eagle push from
yesterday continued, with northbound birds gliding high overhead. Not the
big rush of migrants of yesterday, but solid for a day this late in the
season.
Non-raptor Observations:
The first Bobolinks of the year were among the 41 species observed today,
their melon-hued napes glowing in the filtered light. Any one (or several)
of nine warbler species could be heard at a given time as they worked over
the freshly leafed out trees for snacks.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Common Loon- 6 Double-crested Cormorant- 1
Chimney Swift- 3 Barn Swallow- 11 Tree Swallow- 21 swallow sp.- 32
Blue Jay- 7 Yellow-rumped Warbler- 2
Bobolink- 4 American Goldfinch- 3 passerine sp- 3
Predictions:
Tomorrow will be chilly after the weather we've had recently. The high will
be in the upper 50s, feeling cooler with a brisk, 10-20mph west-southwest
wind. Wind gusts could be in the 25-30mph range. Skies will be clear in the
morning, with partly cloudy conditions later on.
