Visitors:
15. A special thanks to Will Russell for spending the morning at the
hawkwatch, and to Doug Prescott for all the days you've come up this
season, well timed this afternoon for the Black Vulture's appearance.
Weather:
Brisk and breezy with wind whipping out of the west at 10-15mph and gusting
higher. Temperatures made it to the mid-50s later in the day as the wind
slacked off. There was a perfect blend of sun and clouds patterning the
sky, providing lift for migrants and a backdrop to see them against.
Raptor Observations:
2:30p.m., a vulture rose out of the gap to vanish behind the pine, a
stocky, blunt-winged vulture with hardly a trace of a dihedral. It emerged
out of the other side of the pine, batting at the air in almost panicked
fashion; the first Black Vulture to be seen at the hawkwatch since 2010.
Any day with two vulture species seen is a good day on a Maine mountain!
Non-raptor Observations:
Not as much variety today with the wind muffling bird sounds and dissuading
migrants from journeying on. Late in the afternoon, one of the Blackburnian
Warblers perched in a nearby oak, tiger colors refined to warbler form.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Common Loon- 7 Double-crested Cormorant- 5
Barn Swallow- 6 Tree Swallow- 4 swallow sp.- 1
Pine Siskin- 1 American Goldfinch- 3 finch sp.- 6
passerine sp.- 5
Predictions:
The wind will be a little lighter tomorrow, 5-15mph out of the northwest to
start, then switching to the west sometime in the afternoon. Temperatures
will come close to 60F. There won't be much in the way of cloud cover, but
there may be the occasional patch of white to break up the blue.
