Weather:
A few clouds this morning lingered on the horizon until later in the
afternoon. The wind was light, out of the southwest to start before
swinging due south. Temperatures rose a little higher than predicted,
touching 61F before slowly backing down as the wind increased.
Raptor Observations:
The first of the young Broad-winged Hawks have arrived! Today saw a few
more raptors on the move, begining with an immature Northern Goshawk
turning slow circles under the sun before streaming north. A male Northern
Harrier came low over the summit, perhaps the final "gray ghost" of the
season.
Non-raptor Observations:
The first Blackburnian Warbler of the year showed up near the summit,
singing off the west side of the mountain, one of 5 warbler species
observed today. Blue Jay migration seems to be picking up, with a flock of
19 coming through this morning. In all, 36 species were seen or heard over
the course of the day.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 45 Chimney Swift- 2
Tree Swallow- 13 Barn Swallow- 4 swallow sp- 4
Blue Jay- 20 Yellow-rumped Warbler- 3 Purple Finch- 3
American Goldfinch- 6 passerine sp.- 1
Predictions:
Another day of light, 5-10mph south wind. Partly cloudy skies will
gradually clear through the afternoon. Temperatures will peak around 60,
cooling with the onset of the seabreeze. In other words, it will be quite
similar to what we've been seeing with a few more clouds and a little less
wind, both good signs for a continuing increase in migrant numbers.
