Last nights newcomer to the sound studio was the Whip-poor-wil, back
in the brush next to stream bank outside my bedroom window. I've not
ever seen this bird, but it starts @ 8:30 PM and vocalizes most of the
night until first light. I'll get used to it again, but suspect I'll
be listening for some time.
Today a Brown Thrasher has taken over the microphone. I find it
hilarious to listen, as the noise all comes from one place, but
can make you wonder HOW MANY songs does this bird know? I went
looking for the perch this afternoon, and it flushed to give me a
good look and a solid ID.
I do hear from a different direction that some Orioles have returned.
Our roadway had a major rebuild several years ago, and we no longer
have the habitat of prior, but I can hear them close and suspect they
have moved over into the riverbank where there still is some snaggy
hardwood.
I still hear Pileated Woodpeckers, but this season I've not spotted
them. Same as above, the habitat has changed and they are more
distant now, not in my face.
I've got a pair ( or several pair, not sure yet) of White Throats who
are settling somewhere close to the house. For tiny little things, they
are ROBUST and BUSY foragers who make a LOT of noise scratching in leaf
litter by the front doorstep ( that I am loathe to clean up just yet).
Fun is watching a White Throated Sparrow wrestle down a cold and sleepy
June Bug for dinner.
My scarlet quince is in bloom, and soon to come the various apples
and crabapples. I've hung the hummer feeder, haven't seen any takers
yet, my usual date for them here is between the 6th and the 10th.
Blackflies are evident, but I've not seen the tree swallows or
bluebirds this year.
