Subject: [Maine-birds] Gaggle of Eagles

I don't think "gaggle" is the right term, but on Saturday we saw a strange collection of bald eagles around the pond at Cowshit Corner in Newcastle.

3 adults (actually, looking at the photo, probably older juveniles whose heads were getting white) were perched in the one big white pine, a 4th in a big pine about 20 yards away, and 2 juveniles were on the ground at the edge of the pond.  I saw several other juveniles flying, but didn't see where they came from or landed.

I've seen collections like this in the winter, and this time of year around food sources like alewife or (earlier in the spring) smelt runs.  And of course there are often multiple eagles at Hatch Hill.

But I've never seen such a collection around an inland site without any obvious food source, and these were all really bunched up in a small area.

Weird.  Anybody got a hypothesis for what might have drawn the crowd?
