[Maine-birds] Downeast whalewatch

Why, yes. The whales and pelagic birds were great off MDI today. I actually went out of Milbridge with Robinson’s Sea Tours today. The Great Shearwaters were numerous – over a thousand on the day. (Only two Sooty Shearwaters and no Manx. Go figure.) Wilson’s Storm-petrels and Northern Gannets were abundant. There were small numbers of Red-necked Phalaropes but I only saw two Reds. One Parasitic Jaeger. Only a few puffins near Petit Manan and the Razorbills seem to have hit the water and moved off the island altogether. Saw some at sea but not near the island.

Meanwhile shorebird numbers downeast are building nicely. A big crowd of adult SemiP Sandpipers were at Pinkham Bay in Steuben yesterday afternoon and bunches more at the Milbridge public boat landing this morning. Other shorebird species in smaller numbers, but nothing particularly rare. Bonaparte’s Gulls are increasing in both places, too.

Loads of humpbacks and finbacks on the whale watch today. As it happens, the captain is a friend who invited me out for the morning and, when he didn’t have a full boat for the afternoon, asked if I would like to do the second run, too. Well, YES! Great day. I’m sunburned.
