[Maine-birds] Bar Harbor Whale Watch - report and upcoming trip

Hey everyone:

On Tuesday, Pat Moynahan and I went out on the morning (8:30) whale watch from Bar Harbor. Usually around this time of year they stop going to Petit Manan so you get to spend more time offshore with pelagic birds. A lack of whales in the beginning allowed us a lot of time to count birds around the East Bumps as the boat did short transects for almost an hour before moving east to the Ballpark. It didn't take long to find a couple humpbacks there so that ledge wasn't covered as well but there were plenty of avian highlights throughout the trip:
Great Shearwater (144)
Sooty Shearwater (3+)
Manx Shearwater (2-3)
Wilson's Storm-Petrel (136)
Leach's Storm-Petrel (3)
Northern Gannet (6)
Red-necked Phalarope (343)
Red Phalarope (390)
Pomarine Jaeger (5)
Parasitic Jaeger (1)
Razorbill (2)
Atlantic Puffin (1)
Yellow Warbler (1) flyby almost 20 miles offshore

And I was asked to remind everyone about Maine Audubon's annual pelagic trip coming up on September 14th. I cannot express how much I love this trip and birding from the Friendship V. You can't beat a fast and incredibly smooth jet-powered catamaran that will have a bunch of very knowledgable birders on board to help! For more information on this trip, go to: http://maineaudubon.org/events/2013/bar-harbor-pelagic-trip-2/
Also, I tried updating an old summary of each past year's trip that I had based on the notes from each that I could find. I made this into a pdf available at: http://ebird.org/content/me/wp-content/uploads/sites/35/Maine-Audubon-Pelagic-Summary.pdf
(If anyone has additional notes, especially on mammals, from the last few years then please share them with me. Thanks!)

Good birding,

Doug Hitchcox
