[Maine-birds] flying ants, shorebirds, and toddlers

Amazing beach morning. Hundreds (maybe a thousand or more) of peeps (primarily Semipalm Plovers, one Piping Plover noted) along Pine Point and OOB feeding on gazillions of flying ants (many dead, but in some areas the beach looked like it was crawling). I've only seen insects of this magnitude once before when I witnessed an immense Mayfly hatching along the Susquehanna River in upstate NY over 20 years ago. My laugh for the day was provided by an immature Herring Gull who was nagging its' parent(?) unmercifully following it, chasing it all over the beach. This youngster seemed to have a blood worm in its bill but still wanted its parent to feed it. The parent finally stopped to yell at the toddler who then finally ceased its incessant begging.
