[Maine-birds] Gilsland Farm Birdwalk

The mornings continue to chill, this morning we actually found a frosty-edged leaf in the West Meadow. All the frost was confined to a lower area of the meadow though. The bird species dipped with the mercury as well; a hearty 41 species were tallied during our walk. Here are a few highlights:

An immature Red-tailed Hawk continues to put on a show in the West Meadow. Two adult Bald Eagles gave an auditory tease as they called loudly before flying almost straight away from us over the river.

Also, an apparent 'Ipswich' Savannah Sparrow was found in the West Meadow near the path that leads down to the 'north blind.' This is my earliest dates for this large and pale subspecies, which luckily gave everyone a good look as it posed with some 'Eastern' SAVS.

Here is a complete checklist from the walk: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15368410

And don't forget! This Saturday, Maine Audubon will be taking part in birding's most sedentary event: The Big Sit. I will still be leading the birdwalk at 7am but please come by and help count birds from our spot in the North Meadow.

Good birding,
