[Maine-birds] Little Gull near Belfast

An adult Little Gull was seen at the mouth of the Little River about one mile south of Belfast on Sunday morning.  The gull was observed for about 1/2 hour standing on a rockweed covered rock and swimming nearby, and was still there when I left.

The bird was small (about 1/6 the size of a nearby adult Herring Gull) and chunkier than a Bonaparte's Gull.  While standing and swimming, there was no black seen in the primaries.  Feet and legs were not black, but in the early light I could not determine the actual color.  The bill was straight and black.  Behind the eye was a black smudge patch (noticeably larger than that of a Bonaparte's), and there was a black cap wrapping around the back of the head ( in other words, the head markings were exactly as depicted in field guides for a bird in winter plumage).  While I was there, the bird never took flight and I never saw the black wing linings.
