[Maine-birds] Merrymeeting Audubon Big Sit

A successful 2nd annual Merrymeeting Audubon Big Sit! was held on Sunday at Wharton Point in Brunswick.  We didn't top the American White Pelican observed here a year ago, but our numbers were much better this year with a total of 59 species.

The tidal action and exposed mudflats at the head of Maquoit Bay is a great bird magnet, including a large (almost 800 individuals) group of Black ducks and 10 species of shorebirds.  The shorebird action attracted exciting pursuits by a Merlin and a Peregrine.  The Peregrine executed a unique stoop, with half-folded wings, as it surprised a group of peeps and Dunlins.  Fortunately for the shorebirds, both falcons were unsuccessful in their quests.

Thanks to all who spent time in the Big Sit! circle.

Good birding,

Gordon
