[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Purple Finches

Even before the sun was up this AM, my yard held a couple dozen busy Purple Finches.  A couple were vocalizing- doing mumble-y partial songs in the frosty shrubs at dawn.

There have been gradually increasing numbers of PUFI's lately, but overnight the yard count jumped substantially.  This is the first solid evidence of a fall/winter finch flight for me.

The cold temperatures overnight silenced the insects and with passerine migration winding down, a distant Barred Owl was the only sound I could hear at 4:30 this AM .

Cheers
Bill
