Leon Mooney and I spent the day on Monhegan Island today and were not disappointed. We did not find any real rarities in terms of  Monhegan, but due to the overnight migration, there were plenty of birds around. Birds were still arriving when our boat touched down and continued to arrive for the first hour.

We found 70 species on the island including 14 species of warblers led by 200-400 Yellow-Rumps. Wilson's Warbler, Chestnut-Sided Warbler and particularly Ovenbird seemed late. Merlins were everywhere as were Yellow-Bellied Sapsuckers, Golden-Crowned Kinglets, and Palm Warblers. There were 3-4 Clay-Colored Sparrows present today feeding with mixed Dickcisselless flocks. 2 exhausted Wood Ducks were at lobster cove amongst the Mallards as were 2 Bobolinks and an unidentified Sharp-Tailed Sparrow that presumably was the Nelson's Sparrow seen by Derek and his group last week. Leon and I also appreciated viewing Rusty Blackbirds from just a few feet away and 5 Black-Throated Blue Warblers snagging bugs under an apple tree right at our feet!

Bird haahd,
